Benefits of a Watch Collection

As humans we've been collectors since the days of the Ancient Egyptians, it's simply in our nature to preserve and protect objects we find interesting. From stamps to miniature railways and everything in between we continue to keep up the habit to this day, and no doubt will be collecting for infinite generations to come.

When you outgrow childhood phases of collecting football stickers, old coins or even golf balls, it's time to find something with a bit more gravitas. A watch collection is the perfect next step. But, why?

A watch collection can be an extension of your personality. Whether you're outgoing, introverted, bold or quiet there's a timepiece to reflect who you are. The thrill of discovering one is the most important part of the collecting game.

The great thing about collecting watches is they can be found absolutely anywhere and everywhere and they don't have to cost a fortune to bring you happiness. One of the first watches I bought myself was during a family holiday in Spain as a teenager. Wandering off into an obscure camping shop I spotted a shelf holding oversized faced camping style watches with basic nylon straps. They were in small wooden boxes which had a map inside. Thirty euros each? Yes, please! Despite the modest price I'd go on to receive plenty of "nice watch" comments over the years. Always a boost. Admittedly, it was the box and map that won me over but I'll accept the praise!

Even a boring shopping trip with your better half can be broken up by sloping off to the jewellers to admire watches!

Over the years you develop an appreciation for the craftsmanship of watches too. Sleek lines, the finish, the colours, the quality of the strap, the quality of the mechanism...the list is endless. When you have them in your own wardrobe it's nice to sneak a peek every so often and admire your own collection.

Practicality is another viable reason to have a watch collection. Having a watch at hand (pun intended) to suit every occasion is part of becoming a well rounded gentleman. You can have formal watches, work watches, "meeting the lads" watches and even a watch to wear for day to day errands.

Always be ready.

Now, if you're lucky enough to have an emotional tie to any watches in your collection then yours is the Earth and everything that's in it.

An engraved Longines birthday gift sits proudly at the front of my drawer- a simple and understated watch from my parents.

They got me.

Thinking of getting your watch collection started? There's no time like the present.
